Palo Verde PTA and School News

From our PTA President….

Dear Palo Verde Families,

What a fabulous science extravaganza this week!  Over 250 projects were on display.  My family had a wonderful time perusing the science boards on Wednesday night.  A couple of times I was even lucky enough to find a young scientist standing near the project and was treated to a personal explanation of the experiment’s details.  Biology, physics, chemistry, geology, psychology, robotics … the range of topics explored was exhilarating and extensive.  The children’s pride in their discoveries and their families’ support and enthusiasm were fully evident.

Many thanks go out to our Science Fair Coordinators and their team of volunteers who smoothly organized the event early Wednesday morning, with special gratitude to our custodial staff who set-up all the tables in the MP room in advance.

Warmest regards,
Heather Schultz

Come see Pinocchio at Palo Verde

Hop a ride with Pinocchio as he takes off on his classic adventure!  This children’s play adapted by Kathryn Schultz Miller is faithful to the original beloved story by Carlo Collodi with lots of fun and comedy! One lonely night the Blue Fairy grants Geppetto’s wish and brings his little wooden puppet to life.  So begins Pinocchio’s journey as he tangles with the tricksters, Fox and Cat, and meets up with Lampwick and his no-good buddies in the Land of Toys .  Will he save Geppetto from belly of the whale?  Will he ever prove to the Lucky Stars that he is good enough… to become a real boy?

Science Fair Next Week

The Science Fair will take place on Wednesday, March 23. Students’ science projects will be on display at the MP room from 6-8pm for students and their families to visit.  Please bring the completed projects to the MP room early before school on the morning of the Science Fair. We recommend that you not leave any expensive gadgets or computers that were a part of the science project in the MP room.

In the days following the Science Fair, students will be able to present their projects to their teachers and classmates during class time. A volunteer parent may attend these presentations. Please arrange this directly with the class teacher.

All Science Fair students are automatically entered in a raffle drawing. The winners will be announced during school hours after the Science Fair.

It has been 14 years since the first Palo Verde Science Fair, with excellent participation each year. Last year 261 students prepared 254 science projects! We look forward to even greater participation this year.  Thank you for your support and cooperation.  The schedule will be as follows:

Wednesday, March 23

7:30-8:15 am         Bring projects to MP room before school – Helpers Needed

6-8pm                    Science Fair in the MP room

Thursday, March 24

8:00 a.m.   Move projects to classrooms

Science Fair Needs Volunteers

Leader Needed for May Fete Parade

Palo Verde needs an adult leader for the city May Fete Parade this year.  The traditional children’s parade will take place Saturday morning, May 7th, through downtown Palo Alto.  Our new May Fete leader will decide whether or not to have a school float in this year’s parade.  If we don’t have a parent leader by the end of March, Palo Verde may not participate in the parade this year.  To volunteer, contact Lili Nova-Roessig, roessig4 at yahoo dot com.

Palo Verde PTA and School News

Dear Palo Verde Families,

I’ve been perusing my Night in the Tropics auction catalog strategizing which items to bid on first.  I’ve also heard from the auction committee that new items and parties have been added to the selections.  I can’t wait to see them all, and all of you, tomorrow night at Trader Vic’s.  It’s Palo Verde’s biggest party of the year.

Of course, the fun doesn’t end even when the auction is over.  With all the fantastic “Get Togethers” organized and donated by generous families, your social calendar can be filled for the rest of the spring.  Our fabulous Palo Verde teachers have all created wonderful events that are up for bid, too.   There are parties just for kids, parties just for grown-ups, and parties for the whole family.  While you have a great time and make some new friends, you’re also helping the school.  It doesn’t get more Win-Win than that.

See you tomorrow night!
Heather Schultz,  PTA President

Auction Tomorrow (3/12): Walk-Ins Welcome

So you didn’t get your Auction RSVP in by end of school TODAY, Friday, March 11th? That’s Ok! You can still attend the Auction as Walk-ins are Welcome! The cost at the door is $35 per person. The event runs from 7-10 PM at Trader Vic’s in Palo Alto (4261 El Camino Real). We have more than 200 items to bid on – everything from gift cards to local businesses, to teacher parties, to special events, to get togethers organized by Palo Verde parents.

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and its success depends on parent participation. For younger grades parents, it’s a great opportunity to meet new families and make new friends. For older grade parents, it’s a chance to reminisce about how quickly our kids make their way from kindergarten to 5th grade. We hope to see you there!

Your Palo Verde Auction Committee,
Kim Amsbaugh, Celia Cheng, Kristin Foss, Ani Gnanalingam, Emily Jacquette, Helen Li, April McCandless

Spring Forward This Weekend!

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour early Sunday morning.  On March 13th, Daylight Savings Time begins again.

Science Fair Needs Morning Volunteers

Palo Verde’s fifth annual Talent Show is scheduled for May 19!

Come share your talent with the Palo Verde community. Singers! Dancers! Musicians! We want you! We’re interested in a wide variety of talents for the show.  A flyer will be sent home with your child soon.  If interested, please return the bottom portion of the flyer by Friday, April 1, and return it to your child’s teacher.  We look forward to seeing Palo Verde’s talent!

School Board to Discuss Increasing Elementary Enrollment; Parental Input Desired

Tuesday, March 8, 9a-1p.

25 Churchill Ave., Palo Alto

The PAUSD School Board is holding a study session devoted entirely to planning for elementary school enrollment and facilities in the district.  They are seeking parental participation in this discussion.  This is a unique opportunity for parents to give input to the school board in a less formal setting than a regular school board meeting.  If you are concerned about growing enrollment in Palo Alto and would like to learn how the school district is planning for it, please carve time out of your day for this meeting.

Principal’s Coffee and PTA Chat

Please join us next Wednesday, March 9, for a special PTA Chat at the monthly Wednesday morning coffee.

It’s Time to RSVP to the Palo Verde Auction

You know the date: March 12th. You know the time: 7-10 pm. You know the place: Trader Vic’s, Palo Alto. But have you turned in your RSVP yet? A new RSVP form is attached to the Voice in your Friday Folder.

If you need a little nudge to convince you to attend, this is Palo Verde’s major fundraiser of the year. Last year, we had 91 families attend, which totaled to nearly 135 people. So it’s also the biggest Palo Verde party of the year!  Please turn in your RSVP form and join the party.

If you still can’t make it, you can make a tax-deductible donation toward our Direct Appeal Campaign: to buy 22 new collapsible tables for the MP Room.
