Palo Verde and PTA News  PiE “You Make the Difference” ChallengeIf you have already donated to PiE, thank you. If you have not donated to PiE yet this year, this is your last chance to give to this year’s school campaign.

Please consider donating to PiE during our final “You Make The Difference” challenge. A generous donor has funded this grant, which will give our schools $50,000 but only if 300 families who have not yet donated give to PiE by January 27. “You can make the difference” by supporting PiE and helping us continue to fund classroom aides, science and the arts in elementary schools. PiE funds now make up more than half of the flexible spending at our school and we could not offer your children the quality education we do without your support of PiE. Although the “ask” for a family donation is $800 per child, donations of any amount are much appreciated and needed. Our district-wide goal is to have an additional 300 families donate by the end of the challenge grant, joining more than 4,000 families who have given to PiE already. Please take advantage of this last challenge grant and help PiE reach its goal. Go towww.papie.org/donate, or leave a check in the school office.

Kindergarten Priority 1 Registration

Registration for the 2012-2013 school year is currently in progress.  If you have a child who will be entering Kindergarten next school year, please register them no later than Friday, February 10, 2012.  Incoming kinder siblings will be guaranteed a spot at Palo Verde, as long as they are registered by February 10th.  Information can be found at: www.pausd.org/enrollment.

Science Night at Palo Verde, MP Room: Medical Mysteries

Please join us in the MP room on Wednesday, February 8, from 6:00-7:45 PM for Palo Verde’s science night.
Students become “doctor-detectives” who solve medical mysteries while they work at hands-on activity stations to examine pretend-patients. As the students gather information about what made the patients sick, they listen to their own hearts, measure their breath flow, test their eyesight, and are challenged to build a healthy meal. This exciting event introduces elementary school students to the field of medical science and to healthy behaviors.

The Palo Alto PTA Art Contest

Palo Alto PTA will be hosting an art contest together with PAArtY (Palo Alto Art for Youth). Your child can submit their own artwork, photography or literature (short essay, poem,…). Art work and photos should be sized between 5″ x 7″ and 10″ x 13″. Literature should be limited to 1 page. All entries will be displayed at PALO VERDE, and all participants will receive a certificate. Selected pieces will be displayed at designated places around Palo Alto. Note that all students may submit one piece/entry and that all entries should correspond to one student. Turn in your child’s work with an entry form that is going in the child’s Friday folder by Tuesday, January 31, 2012. A designated collection box has been set up in the office. Theme for this year (optional) : ”I am inspired by …” Contact for Palo Verde: Shiah-Yun Chen (shiahyun@gmail.com)

The Annual Palo Verde Notecard Fundraiser is Coming!

As in previous years, each child designs his/her own personal notecard/notepads which you may order and purchase.  The kids are so proud of their artwork and parents always love how they turn out!  Plus, they come in handy and make great
gifts.  A portion of the proceeds goes directly to our school. The orders will be distributed in mid-April and will be here in time for Mother’s Day.
The notecards will be coming home with your child by Friday, January 27. Your classroom teacher and the school office have extra note cards in case you would like to purchase more than one design or if you have other children who would
like to create one.  Please return the order form with payment to school no later than Monday, Feb 6. No late orders please!
If you have any questions, please contact Karen Yu at 493-6999 or yufamily5@sbcglobal.net

Notes from the Nurse-The FLU/COLD SEASON is here!!

The flu/cold season is upon us. This means we should be vigilant about taking care of our loved ones and ourselves. Remember that cold symptoms tend to be milder and flu symptoms more severe, including high temp, severe aches and pains, extreme exhaustion and severe cough. We believe that your fellow students and teachers will understand if you are ill and unable to attend school. Check with the teacher regarding making up work according to school policy

A child should not be in school when he/she has:

–Temperature greater than 100 degrees. If a child has had a fever, he/she may not return to school until it has been normal for 24 hours (without taking Tylenol).
–Frequent coughing or sneezing
Sore throat
–A new cold or generally feels bad
–Extreme exhaustion

General Knowledge about Staying Healthy and Preventing Colds/Flu:

 –Get plenty of rest

–Maintain well balanced diet including at least 5 servings each day of fruits and vegetables

–Drink 6-8 glasses of fluid each day

–Exercise daily, even short walks can help

–WASH YOUR HANDS!!!! Use warm water and soap and wash for at least 10 seconds

–Think prevention. Dress appropriately for the weather

–REMEMBER THE SNEEZE/COUGH!!- Dr. recommendation is to cover the mouth/nose with
the inside of the elbow

Consult your Dr. for advice on receiving a flu shot. It is not too late to get a flu shot this year

Science Books from City of Palo Alto Utilities

The Palo Alto Unified School District greatly benefits from the generous support of the City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU). Since 2005, CPAU has donated fifty thousand dollars each year to fund educational projects related to water and energy conservation and renewable energy. We have used this funding to enrich our science program. Past projects have ranged widely, from providing fountains powered by solar cells to school sites, to funding field trips related to water. The Palo Alto Unified School District greatly benefits from the generous support of the City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU). Since 2005, CPAU has donated fifty thousand dollars each year to conservation for sixth grade students. Recently, the funding was used to purchase books sets that supplement our science and literacy curriculum. The books sets are on topics of water and energy conservation and are correlated to our adopted science program. Because the books were purchased in sets of six, and are labeled with a corresponding science unit and reading level, teachers can use them during reading or science to provide small group instruction.

We are so appreciative of this generous funding because we can tailor the resources to support our adopted curriculum. Teachers can incorporate those resources seamlessly, and enhance the educational experience they provide to students each and every day.
