The PTA needs tech help ! Calling all dads (and moms)

who can help us improve the MP room sound system!

With the talent show coming up soon, the PTA needs better speakers. The ones we have do not give a good sound. The PTA is looking to get them fixed and put them in the back of the MP room and get new ones for the front. There would be some work to connect both sets to the box in the front of the stage. We also need a permanent reliable connector for MP3 players, iphones, ipods so that we can play music from them without having to rely on converter cables. We also need a permanent reliable connector to the projector for movie nights, presentations etc:  If you are interested in this volunteering opportunity , please send an email to glen.denise.white@gmail.com

From Last Week

Why is the Palo Verde PTA Spring Social and Online/Silent Auction, our school’s biggest fundraiser of the year, even more important this year than in recent years?

1.The PTA has seen a decline in funding in recent years along with an increase in the number of students to support and a drop in volunteers to implement its many programs.

2.     Many factors have affected the PTA’s funding including a drop in support from businesses (i.e. Safeway dropped from eScrip), a drop in family contributions & a decline in volunteers to help raise funds.

Why support the PTA?
This week the PTA is hosting Project Cornerstone BIG week with activities every day during lunch recess.  Just yesterday the PTA hosted a Project Cornerstone BIG Fun Day noon assembly of music, appearances by the Palo Verde Eagle and Gerald the Giraffe, and brand new hula-hoops, jump ropes and balls.  It was quite festive on campus and there was so much joy among the children!  It was contagious!

One of the primary uses of the funds raised from the Palo Verde PTA Spring Social and Online/Silent Auction is to fund our teachers’ training in the Columbia University’s Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop Instruction that benefits EVERY child.

In addition, the Palo Verde PTA supports the children and community of Palo Verde in so many wonderful ways year after year.  The following is a list of some of what the PTA organizes and provides volunteers and/or funds for that touch our lives in the classroom, at school and in the community.
  • Art night

  • Bike/Traffic Safety
  • Book Fair

Court rules against releasing CDE CALPADS database

Parents and students’ objections help make the case

In a welcome step in the right direction, Federal Judge Kimberley Mueller ruled that the California Department of Education (CDE) will not have to release its largest database — called the “California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System” or “CALPADS” — which contains the most sensitive, personal and vulnerable information on California’s current and former public-school students.

The order does not address the type of information CDE can or cannot release if requested by the plaintiffs or whether any of that information can be redacted. The judge’s decision was supported by all parties who will be working together over the next month to determine a process.

While California State PTA is not a party to these legal proceedings, the organization is on record calling for a balance of data with privacy. We will keep you updated with any further information regarding these legal proceedings.

COURT RECEIVES ‘VOLUMINOUS’ NUMBERS OF OBJECTION FORMS

At the related hearing, Judge Mueller noted she has received “voluminous” numbers of objection forms from parents and students concerned about the possible release of personal information. While the forms are not opt-out forms and will not be considered by the court as such, she emphasized that the objection forms reinforced the need to protect students’ information.

Concerned parents and students who attend or attended California public schools since Jan. 1, 2008, may still submit forms. Objection forms will be accepted until April 1. Forms received will be included in the court’s official documentation.
