Commute Pool Groups and Mileage Tracker Forms
We would like to hear from those who are commute pooling to school. If you walk,bike or carpool to Palo Verde with a neighborhood group we would like to get your feedback on how it is working out for you. With the rainy season here, we want to encourage more green commuting and specifically carpooling to reduce traffic congestion around the school. Thank you to all families whose kids green commute to school. This month our kids logged in a total of 675 walking, biking and carpooling miles. The CDC points out the following four major benefits from walking/biking to school:
- Builds and maintains healthy bones, muscles, and joints.
- Helps control weight, build lean muscle and reduce fat.
- Improves sense of self-image and autonomy.
- Fosters healthy social and emotional development.
November Mileage tracker forms went out in today’s Friday folders. If you lose the form, write down your child’s green commute miles for the month with his/her name and room number and drop it off in the envelopes outside his/her classroom door at the end of the month. Alternatively, you can also drop the form in the office in the bin marked traffic safety.
The Lost and Found Cart is Overflowing!
We want to encourage you to check the cart and also to encourage your kids to check the lost and found cart.
Many (not all) of the items appear to belong to older children from perhaps 3rd, 4th and 5th grades who perhaps venture to and/or from school independently. Please consider spending a few minutes writing your child’s name inside their jackets or on their lunchboxes/bags. That way the items can find their owners more quickly.

Stanford University Study on Children With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder
Stanford University is currently conducting a research study on emotion regulation and reactivity among children with and without an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We are recruiting children with ASD and typically developing children (ie. children without a diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, Asperger’s, ASD, or any other psychiatric illness) between the ages of 8 and 21. The study consists of up to 4 sessions and participants will be reimbursed $30 for each session and an additional $30 if the online components (questionnaires and a daily emotion journal) are completed. The total potential cash reimbursement is up to $160. US Citizens only (must have social security number to receive payment). November Community Service Project
The November Community Service Project is a food drive, that will kick-off on Halloween Day. Please send a can of food, or other non-perishable food item, to school with your goblin on Halloween. Second Harvest Food Bank will be delivering barrels for food collection in time for Halloween, and our job will be to fill them from Halloween to November 19. Much of the early collections will be distributed to local food closets (S. Palo Alto Food Closet, Ecuminical Hunger Project, and other local areas) to help ensure that our local neighbors-in-need are cared for. We will keep filling the barrels to help Second Harvest Food Bank help all our neighbors of Santa Clara County. If you’d rather donate a Safeway gift Card so that perishable items can be purchased by the recipient institution, a donation box will be placed in the front office. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity. The kids really got a kick out of watching the food pile up last year! November Asset of the Month: Embrace Diversity
It is important for youth to feel that they belong. Positive identity brings self-assurance, a sense of belonging, a positive view of personal future, and better success in school. Developing a positive cultural identity-a critical element of personal identity-can be difficult for young people, especially when they may be bridging more than one culture.
The way that youth are treated in regard to their ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or gender directly affects their ability to develop a positive personal identity. As adults, it’s critical that we model recognition, understanding, and celebrating of all cultural identities, including the cultures to which we and/or our children do not belong.
Sharing and celebrating different cultural identities increases self-esteem and promotes cultural competence among all young people. The diversity of Palo Alto is a benefit to our youth as they are exposed to many different cultures.
The following discussion topics* can help families talk about their cultural identity:
* What is our cultural background?
* What are some things that you value about our culture?
* What are some things about our culture that you would like other people to know?
* Do you know anyone who’s from a different culture? In what ways are your cultures similar and different? Do your cultural differences make it difficult to be friends? How can you share your cultural differences in a positive, nonjudgmental way?
