California Schools are in Trouble: Sign the online PTA Petition!
CA once had top performing, top funded schools. Now, even after Prop 30, CA ranks 49th in school funding, and our schools perform near bottom on national assessments. CA spends $8,000 per student while top performing education states spend $16,000 – $22,000 per student. Palo Alto only spends at the national average. Sign the online Sixth District PTA petition to restore CA schools to excellence. To learn more about school funding, watch this PTA video and visit our Sixth District PTA Advocacy Website. Subject: New Pedestrian Beacons Installed at Charleston/Louis and Newell/Hopkins

Last week, the City of Palo Alto installed pedestrian-activated flashing pedestrian beacons at Newell Road & Hopkins Drive and at Charleston Road & Louis Road to aid pedestrians crossing at these locations. The systems include three warning elements to help notify motorists of pedestrian activity including a flashing ball, pedestrian warning signs with embedded flashing LEDs, and a rapid flashing LED bar. Pedestrians can activate the warning device by pushing the pedestrian push button at each location. Each button activates all of the warning lights at each crossing. Once the warning device is activated, pedestrians should exercise caution and wait for vehicles to stop in both directions before entering the crosswalk. Each system currently flashes for 60-seconds when activated. Upgrades later this month will allow the system to provide shorter flashing cycles.

The locations for these devices were identified through the City’s Safe Routes to School program which is assessing the commutes of schoolchildren in Palo Alto using a grant from the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). Funding for these devices and their installation was provided by the City of Palo Alto. Questions about the devices can be directed tosaferoutes@cityofpaloalto.org or 650-329-2156.

Typing Program helps Elementary Students Prepare for Smarter Balanced Assessments

Students will use computers or other devices such as iPads to take the Smarter Balanced Assessments beginning in third grade. To help students with keyboarding skills, PAUSD has a typing program available to all elementary students. Type To Learn 4 (TTL4) is a student typing program purchased by the district and made available to all PAUSD elementary sites and for use at home by students.
To use TTL4, parents must download & install the TTL4 Web (School to Home)/Network program from http://ttl4.sunburst.com/downloads/. Parents will need the TTL4 account code to install and log in for the first time. Students and parents can retrieve the account code from the student portal page. Students log in to TTL4 each time with their student ID number and a TTL4 password given to them by their teacher. For any login problems, please contact your student’s teacher.
Reminder: the student portal requires the student’s ID number and password. This ID number is available on the parent portal log in page next to your student’s name. Your student’s account was given a default password at the beginning of the school year and they were required to reset the password the first time they logged in. Principals are discussing the best way to integrate typing instruction into the curriculum, so please check in with your school’s principal for other opportunities.

Protecting Staff and Student Privacy
PAUSD takes every precaution to protect students’ & staff’s personally identifiable information from loss, unauthorized access, or theft by implementing an in depth security strategy. PAUSD employs both a technological & collaborative approach to defending against cyber threats, & shares best practices with other school districts. We monitor, analyze, and assess threats on a daily basis.
It has become shockingly easy to give away our own, or others’, personal info, with a click of a mouse. Some key questions:
– Am I sharing private, personally identifiable data?
– What do I know about the company I’m sharing my data with?
– Is this my data to share?
These considerations apply whether a teacher is signing students up for a web service or a parent is taking pictures on campus. We ask all staff, students, & parents to “think before they click” and obtain appropriate permission before sharing data with vendors or posting images & info to social media.
For questions, concerns, or more info about student, staff, or parent privacy, feel free to contact your school’s Principal..

We’ll start accepting items at 9:30. Each person will receive tickets based on the type of items they bring to the swap. For example: action figures, 1 ticket; puzzles and board games, 2 tickets; video games and building sets, 3 tickets. From 10am until 1pm, tickets can be redeemed for toys at the swap on a first come, first served basis.

At the end of the swap all leftover toys will be donated to Goodwill (or another charity…I’d appreciate suggestions).

Palo Verde Run Club

Hello Palo Verde Community!  Instead of holding a Girls on the Run program this year at Palo Verde, the PV coaches, Mrs. Brown, and I decided to instead have our very own Palo Verde Run Club, which will be open to both girls and boys in 4th and 5th grades.  The Palo Verde run club will be absolutely free of charge for families.  We are thrilled to offer a health-promoting after school club that is free for students and open to both girls and boys.  The Palo Verde Run Club will meet twice each week starting on March 10th, after school from 3:00-3:40 on Mondays and one other day during the week that is yet to be determined. The club sessions will not only focus on noncompetitive running, but also on teamwork, building compassion/empathy, and on developing confidence and a positive self-esteem in our student-athletes.  Be on the lookout for more details to follow after winter break.

Have a great week!
