From the Desk of Lupe Garcia

Dear Palo Verde Parents, Students and Community,

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a restful and joyous holiday break with family and friends.  The children have returned to school with renewed energy and enthusiasm for tackling the rest of the year.  Let’s work together to ensure your child does his/her best as we move ahead.

• Think safety: The weather has changed drastically.  It’s cold and rainy, complicating the transition to and from school.  Please emphasize to your child/ren the need for caution when on the way to and from school, whether on bicycle or on foot.  Do ask that they take particular care when crossing the street at intersections and when going behind parked cars.  Better to think defensively and be safe, than to be concerned about who was right, after the fact.  Also keep these tips in mind if you drop-off or pick-up your child before and after school.  Parents, as drivers, please take extra care as you drive to and from school, as well.  You are the model the children look up to and emulate.

• Did you know we have a Green Club at Palo Verde? The club is made up of students, with Ms. Aza, fifth grade teacher, providing the staff sponsorship and guidance.  The club is just about to embark on a very ambitious undertaking.  The students have self-selected into sub-groups, each taking on an individual project on campus.  Some of these projects include: Recycling, Walk to School Wednesdays, Green Day, and others.  Please join us!  The Club would welcome additional adult volunteers to support and guide the work of the individual student groups.  If you are interested, or have questions, please contact either Ms. Aza or myself.  It is truly exciting when our youth is ready and willing to undertake positive steps to improve our environment.  I hope you can join us to support their efforts.

Do stay in touch with us. Everyone is working diligently on behalf of the children and the community, but sometimes during the course of the day we do things with which you might not agree or perhaps which might not be clear to you.  If that is the case, please contact our office so we can speak directly.  As adults, we need to model clear communication skills for our children when there are questions or concerns.  At Palo Verde, we strongly value your input and support.  Let’s work together!

Warmest regards,

Lupe García

Treat Yourself to the Sweet Tooth Auction

Sponsored by the Palo Verde PTA, this year’s event is shaping up to the sweetest one yet with more than 200 items up for auction. Teachers are offering class parties, special outings and lunches; restaurants have donated gift certificates; sports teams have donated tickets and merchandise; and we even have a tour of the Santa Clara County Jail with Supervisor Liz Kniss. And of course let’s not forget the ever-popular Principal for a Day

Tickets are available now for this adult-only affair – $10 per person in advance or $20 per person at the door. Your ticket includes admission and one drink token. This year, money raised at the auction goes toward the Palo Verde Library. With the proceeds, the PTA hopes to purchase a projection system, book binding machine and equipment to establish a listening lab for all students. So join us for a night of savory treats, scrumptious sweets and a no-host bar as we help raise money to improve our school library.  (Please print the following form and hand in to the office.)
