Vote for the February Family Movie! 

Hey, Palo Verde!  You get to choose the movie for this month’s Family Movie Night.  Please go to this Survey Monkey link to vote:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FY2DMHZ   The choices are:  Big Hero 6, The Good Dinosaur, The Lion King, or Minions.  Voting will close on February 12, and we’ll announce the winner the following week. 

The last Winter Family Movie Night will happen on Friday, February 26, at 6:30pm in the MP Room.  See you then!

Palo Verde Norecard Fundraiser

It’s time for our annual Notecard Fundraiser!  Each child designs his/her own personal and unique note card.  They come in very handy and also make great gifts (Mother’s Day/Father’s Day).  In addition to notecards, there are other products (notepads, stickers, and gift tags) that you can also order at the same time.  Siblings, Parents and Grandparents are welcome to design and order products through this Fundraiser as well!  Please join us and enjoy your creative and artistic talent.

A portion of the proceeds goes directly to our school.


The notecards and order forms will go home in the Friday folders around Valentine’s Day. Extra blank notecards and order forms are available in the office. Please return the order form, completed notecard, and a check made payable to “Palo Verde PTA” to your child’s teacher or the office by Friday, February 26th.  The orders will be distributed in late April or early May. Lost & Found Cart

– Pick up Your Items before February 4th!

Please check the lost and found cart and claim any items that belong to you by February 4th.  After February 4th, we will send coats and jackets to refugee children on the island of Lesvos, Greece and remaining items will be donated to a local charity.

Send Palo Verde Teachers & Staff Flowers for Valentine’s Day! 

You can send Valentine’s Day flowers to any teacher or staff member to be delivered to their classroom on February 10th, with your note attached.  Each flower is $3 and all proceeds go to the Palo Verde PTA.
1)    Fill out a note (forms available in Friday folders and in the front office) for each staff member and indicate number of flowers 

2)    Attach cash or check, (make checks to Palo Verde PTA), $3/flower
3)    Put form in the basket in the front office

Seeking Volunteers to Help with Coffee Socials Set-up and Clean-up

As part of our community building efforts, the PTA has a tradition of providing coffee once a month during assembly. This provides parents/PTA members with an opportunity to stop after drop off and connect with other parents over a cup of coffee and treats once a month, vote on PTA matters during our general meetings and get up to speed with school events announced at the assembly. 
 
We are looking for parent volunteers who are willing to set up the coffee table and clean up after the assembly on any or all of the coffee social dates.

Description

Join us for an afternoon book club to discuss Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley. We’ll meet at the Palo Verde Library after school for sharing, discussion and tasty treats, as we talk about 4th and 5th grade perspectives on this popular grade school book. Please purchase/borrow and have your 4th or 5th grader read the book in advance. Each child will go home with a new book!

Make a difference!  Help children in the PIKPA refugee camp in Lesvos Greece receive the help they need.A student at Palo Verde Elementary, Kaliope Hendershot, is collecting money to help a child psychologist build an activities room for activity-based therapy at Camp PIKPA.  PIKPA is a volunteer-run refugee camp in Lesvos, Greece providing shelter and care for children who are orphaned, alone, sick, disabled and/or traumatized.  Your donations will go directly towards helping these children recover. 12th Annual Sweetheart Awards – Call for Nominations
Nominations Due Feb 10
Is there a bus driver, friend, teacher, administrator, neighbor, aide, crossing guard, fellow student, therapist, physician, volunteer or relative that has done something (however large or small) for your special needs child? Honor that person by nominating him or her for a Sweetheart Award. Submit nominations using this online form. Nominations for theFebruary 24th event are due by February 10th. Meeting the Social and Emotional Needs of High Performing Students

Social and emotional learning is critical to the success of youth. It a process through which youth acquire and effectively apply knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and handle emotions, set and accomplish goals, feel and demonstrate empathy for others, and develop and maintain positive relationships. This discussion will be led by nationally renowned Dr. Tracy L. Cross and will help parents deepen their understanding of: How to communicate with their youth, How to develop home environment in which youth feel genuinely supported and accepted, How to help students develop a healthy work/life balance.  Light refreshments and childcare (5 yr and older) available. Deadline for Nominations: Feb 12, 2016
Each year the Palo Alto Council of PTAs may bestow one of several California State PTA Honorary Service Awards to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated outstanding service to children and youth in our community.  The individuals or organization nominated must make far-reaching, notable contributions. The PTA Council HSA Committee selects persons or groups who have benefited children and youth on a district-wide or Palo Alto community level. If you know of someone or an organization that deserves to be honored at this level, please indicate their name so that they may be put into nomination when the committee meets to choose this year’s recipients. DreamCatchers – Looking for Adult Volunteers
Want to help close the achievement gap?  DreamCatchers runs a free after-school tutoring program for low-income PAUSD middle school students, pairing them with volunteers. Seven Principles of Making Marriage Work after Children
Tue, Feb. 23 & Mar. 1, 6:30 – 8:30 PM, Parents Place, 200 Channing Ave., Palo Alto 
Based on the seminal book by John M. Gottman, PhD, this two-part workshop offers an overview of the research, principles, strategies, and skills needed by couples to strengthen their relationship and manage conflict after they become parents.  Participants will be invited to engage in class discussion and participate in exercises during the class and between sessions.  While this relationship enhancement class is not a substitute for couple’s therapy, it builds on the strengths of each couple, as they apply the principles and move closer to having the relationship they want. A chance to ask questions and share ideas, resources, and support with other parents of students with IEPs, 504s, learning differences, mental health challenges, etc.  All are welcome, participants must respect confidentiality.

This parent education event is sponsored by the SELPA 1 CAC (www.selpa1cac.org) an all-volunteer group of parents of children with special needs.  All of our events are free and open to anyone who feels they might benefit.  No registration is necessary.

They’re Driving Me Crazy: Parent Anger – Session 1 – We will explore triggers to your anger, your positive and negative responses to it, and productive management techniques to help when triggers arise in the future.  
That Makes Me So Mad: Child Anger – Session 2 – Children get angry in a split second, often leaving parents in total bewilderment and turmoil.  We will explore anger, ways to help children regain control of themselves, triggers that precipitate the anger, and typical responses to the anger.  $90 for 2 sessions.
