Ahoy Mateys! Deadline for “Treasure Island” Art Contest Fast Approaching
The Palo Alto Children’s Theatre is sponsoring an art contest open to all 1st through 5th grade Palo Verde students. Selected artwork will be used to create the posters and programs for the production of Treasure Island taking place later this month at Palo Verde. Use standard 8 ½” x 11” paper and colored pencils or colored ink pens. Fill the whole page with your images, and make sure to use dense, vibrant colors! Do not write any text on your entry: i.e. name of the production, production dates, etc. On the back of your entry, please write legibly the following: Your name, first and last; Your grade; and One of your parents name and e-mail address. Please return all entries to the Office by Monday, March 16, @ 2:30 p.m.
Tickets on Sale for “Treasure Island” Production at Palo Verde
Over 60 Palo Verde students have signed on as the cast and crew for the Palo Alto Children’s Theatre outreach production of Treasure Island at Palo Verde. This swashbuckling tale features our innocent lass, Jill, as she gets caught up at the center of intrigue and adventure with pirates on the high seas. The production is appropriate for all ages. Don’t forget to check the Lost and Found Cart!
The Lost and Found Cart is filling up again! Please take a few minutes to encourage your child to check the cart and reclaim your belongings. You never know what you’ve forgotten about! Lunch boxes, pumps, boomerangs, hairbands, water bottles, scout uniforms, baseball gloves, bats etc. have all been occupants of the cart at some point!
Labeling items helps me to return belongings. A few minutes can save a LOT of $$$$.
Please remember, the cart is emptied and the goods donated or disposed of at the end of terms. Next emptying date: Apr 2nd.
Talent Show is coming soon! (May 11)

Rally to Save Buena Vista
Mon, Mar 9, 5:30-6:30pm; Palo Alto City Hall Plaza
The Palo Alto Council of PTA and the School Board have both passed resolutions in support of finding options that allow the Buena Vista students to continue to stay in our schools. The County of Santa Clara has set aside $8 million for the preservation of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park and Palo Alto City Manager, Jim Keene also directed city staff to set aside $8 million to preserve the park. This rally is to thank the City Council for it action and also to encourage them to ratify funding at their earliest opportunity.
Please join PTA and the PAUSD school community at the Mar 9 rally. It is critically important for our community to come out in force to encourage City Council to support the preservation of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park. Vote YES on Measure A
Mail in Ballots must be posted by April 30
PTA Council has proudly voted to support the parcel tax renewal, now called Measure A, including a $999 donation to the parcel tax campaign. PTA is the largest child advocacy organization in the country. While we are strictly non-partisan, we can and do advocate for ballot measures. This Measure is extremely important to pass to keep the 80 teachers, counselors, librarians and psychologists for which the current parcel tax pays as well as support the increasing student enrollment (+1100 student since 2008/9, projected increase of +700 in the next 5 years) . The modest increase in the parcel tax will enable a small expansion of funding to support struggling students, STEAM programs and student wellness. Even with the increase in property taxes we have enjoyed in the last year, our school district funds do not keep up with inflation. We have lost approximately $4 million of income annually from the Cubberley lease as well as having to fund our employee pension plan that the state has pushed onto school districts. Because we are a basic aid district we will not get more money from the state’s Local Control Funding Formula. PARCEL TAX CAMPAIGN: PALO VERDE COMMUNITY
This spring, Palo Alto voters will decide whether to approve Measure A, which renews expiring school funding that is used to:
-Attract and retain qualified teachers to keep class sizes small
-Support advanced programs in science, math and technology
-Keep school libraries open and staffed
-Provide elective courses, including art, music, and social sciences for a well rounded education
-Support at-risk students who are struggling
If the parcel tax expires, PAUSD will have to cut $13 million from the annual budget. This tax currently funds 85 full time staff (67 are teachers, others are librarians, counselors and psychologists). For more information on the campaign, please visit our website:
The Palo Verde community is helping the campaign with phone banking on the following dates:
-Thursday, March 26 from 6-9 pm (at Sereno Realty office)
-Monday, May 4 from 6-9 pm (at Sereno Realty office)
Phone banks are the best way to reach our broader community because this mail-in only vote needs a 2 YES votes for every NO vote to pass. Getting supporters to cast a vote in favor of our schools is critical as every vote matters. (This is also a perfect volunteer gig for a working parent as it’s at night and a one time commitment)

Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra

PACO favorite Michel Taddei returns to the podium in a wide ranging program of brilliant string orchestra music, including Britten’s sensuous song cycle Les Illuminations featuring soprano Maria Valdes, a San Francisco Opera Center Adler Fellow. Czech master Antonin Dvorak’s son-in-law, Josef Suk, was a talented composer as well; his sumptuous Serenade for Strings is a charming and virtuosic masterpiece.
PAUSD Students Can Learn Hindi as a World Language

MBK is hosting an Information session will cover options for all students in PAUSD to learn Hindi as a world language. Students of all ages can learn Hindi through After School Program, Summer Classes, and get High School credits. The San Francisco Chamber Orchestra’s Board of Directors is pleased to invite you to its annual gala to be held on. Ben Simon is the host and the theme of the gala is Battle of the Romantics: Beethoven vs. Rossini. Senior PACO players will be making a special guest appearance as the “conduct-us” orchestra at the event. There will be a full orchestral performance by the SFCO and fun live appearances by Beethoven and Rossini themselves!
