Palo Verde PTA and School News
New This Week

Thanks to the teachers, staff and parent volunteers who helped with the food drive in November, especially Victoria Liu, Kala Mehta Lansberg and Susan Papp.  Palo Verde collected 586 pounds, well over our goal!  We were also able to give extra food donations to our NHN local food bank.
Sponsored by the Palo Verde PTA
Tuesday, January 28th 2014, 5:30-7:30 PM
Come join us for the debut of Palo Verde Art Night, designed to draw out the creative spirit in both children and parents.
Three fun activities are sure to ignite your creativity:
  • Fish Printing – Learn about the Japanese art of Gyotaku by painting “fish” to create an impression on textured papers and tie-dyed cloth
  • Bookmaking – Write a story and illustrate your own 3-D Pop-up Book!
  • Tree Construction – Design feathers and leaves for the Palo Verde community art tree
Volunteers needed to assist with the activities. Art expertise not required. To volunteer, please contact Theivanai Palaniappan at theivanai_p (at) hotmail (dot) com by Friday, January 24th.

Lights! Camera! Action! Palo Verde’s annual auction is set for Saturday, March 8th, 7-10:30 pm, at Michael’s at Shoreline. This year’s theme: A Night at the Oscars! Get ready to enjoy a fun-filled evening with drinks, food, music and your Palo Verde friends as we raise money for our kids and Palo Verde school. More details will follow in the coming weeks; but mark your calendars now and schedule those babysitters so you don’t miss out!

Want to help put on Palo Verde’s biggest, most fun event of the year? Join us at 5 pm, this Sunday, January 12th, for a volunteer meeting. Whether you want to be a star or an extra, anyone can help. The more the merrier! Email Kim Amsbaugh at amsbaugh at gmail dot com. She’ll provide the volunteer meeting location and additional details.

Speaking of volunteers: are databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, and mail merges up your alley?  The auction committee could use your skills to help pull off our Night at the Oscars! If you’re interested, contact ebreuner (at) gmail (dot) com to learn about and help with what we do today — or better yet, improve it!

 See everyone on the Red Carpet, March 8th, at Michael’s!

Electronics Recycling Drop-off Event,
Did you replace your old phone or media player this winter? Do you have ancient computer equipment hiding in the garage? Come to our second annual E-waste recycling event on Saturday, Feb. 1st from 10-2!
Appliances, printers, computer accessories, cellphones, toner cartridges, audio and stereo equipment are accepted. NOT accepted: smoke detectors, thermostats, lightbulbs, batteries or tape media. See http://greencitizen.com/what_we_recycle.php for a more complete list.
The event is open to all CA residents. This is not a fundraiser. Green Citizen refurbishes the ewaste if possible, recycles it in the US if not.
We NEED volunteers (students welcome)! Please contact Joslyn Leve, Green Team Chair: joslynml@hotmail.com.

Please consider volunteering during lunch at Palo Verde. Only sign up for once this school year if this is what you can do. If you can come once a month or once a week, it will be even better!  Research shows that youth whose parents are actively involved in their schooling are more engaged in school. Every parent, every day can positively affect kids’ lives.
The more adults are present during recess, the safer the playground will be. Children really enjoy seeing their parents, their friends’ parents, or a new caring adult with a smile on her/his face.
* Sign-up online go to: http://tinyurl.com/pvyardduty
* Days/Times:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday = 12pm-12:45pm

* Children play for the first half, and then eat at their designated tables. Bell will ring when it is time to sit down and eat.
* Go to the office and sign in/out using the volunteer sheet on the counter.  Vest & walkie-talkies will be available in office.
* Once you sign up, we will email you a sheet with general guidelines. There will be a staff person in charge if you have questions onsite.
From Last Week
Palo Verde Run Club

Hello Palo Verde Community!  Instead of holding a Girls on the Run program this year at Palo Verde, the PV coaches, Mrs. Brown, and I decided to instead have our very own Palo Verde Run Club, which will be open to both girls and boys in 4th and 5th grades.  The Palo Verde run club will be absolutely free of charge for families.  We are thrilled to offer a health-promoting after school club that is free for students and open to both girls and boys.  The Palo Verde Run Club will meet twice each week starting on March 10th, after school from 3:00-3:40 on Mondays and one other day during the week that is yet to be determined. The club sessions will not only focus on noncompetitive running, but also on teamwork, building compassion/empathy, and on developing confidence and a positive self-esteem in our student-athletes.  Be on the lookout for more details to follow after winter break.

Have a great week!
