Palo Verde School and PTA News

From Our PTA President……

Dear Palo Verde Families, Our school is already bustling with teachers, staff and parent volunteers preparing for the new school year. As the year progresses, we hope all of you will join us in finding a niche to lend your own talents, time and energy to the wonderful school community of Palo Verde.

We’re looking forward to seeing you this afternoon at the Ice Cream Social when the much-anticipated class lists will be posted.  It’s a fun opportunity to reconnect with friends we’ve missed over the summer, and to reach out to new families joining Palo Verde.  During the social last year, my oldest son met a new 5th grade student who was a bit nervous coming to a different school.  They became fast friends and are now eagerly starting the adventure of middle school together.

Next week during the first days of school, the very important Back to School Packet will come home in your child’s backpack.  Please review the materials in the packet and complete and return the documents to the school office promptly.

On the first day of school, please join the PTA in welcoming our new principal, Anne Brown, to Palo Verde.  The first Principal’s Coffee of the year will be held at 8:15 in the MP room on Tuesday morning.  Mrs. Brown will introduce herself and is looking forward to meeting parents.  As always, younger siblings are welcome to accompany you.

With warmest regards,
Heather Schultz
PTA President

Safeway’s 10% Back to Schools Program & eScrip renewal
As many of you know, through our relationship with eScrip, we can raise funds for Palo Verde just by shopping at Safeway and other merchants. We can raise even more from August 11th to September 14th, when manufacturers of over 5,000 products sold in Safeway stores will contribute an additional 10% of sales as part of Safeway’s Back to Schools program.

Is your Safeway Club Card already registered with eScrip? If so, the contributions you earn will automatically be sent to Palo Verde.  eScrip is an easy way for families to raise money for schools through everyday purchases made at eScrip merchants (such as Safeway), who contribute a percentage of purchases to your chosen group(s).

Want to register with eScrip to start raising funds for Palo Verde while you do your everyday shopping? It’s easy and only takes 5-10 minutes to complete! Simply go to and follow the instructions. Be sure to have your Safeway Club Card number and/or credit cards you use regularly on hand when you register. Our group number is 137331259, Palo Verde PTA.

Can I participate in the 10% Back to Schools Program even if I’m not registered with eScrip?Absolutely! Just shop at Safeway during the Back to Schools campaign period. Families who have not registered their Safeway Club cards with eScrip will receive a coupon at the end of the sales period that can be used to donate the funds to the school of their choice. In late September, we’ll send around instructions about redeeming your rewards to benefit Palo Verde.

Have more questions?Don’t hesitate to contact the Palo Verde eScrip Coordinator, Callie Turk, at
So, mark your calendars and be sure to shop at Safeway during this time and you’ll help raise funds for Palo Verde! Thanks – and see you soon at school!

The “Help!” Desk…

A few critical positions remain unfilled for this school year.  If you would like to make a significant contribution to the Palo Verde Parent-Teacher Association, please volunteer for one of the following important leadership positions:
Auction Co-chairs
The auction held in the spring is our single most important fundraiser!  Last year the auction brought in over $25,000 to Palo Verde. Several fabulous volunteers have already signed up to help with the auction, but we urgently need two or three leaders to chair this very important committee.  Support and training from experienced past auction chairs is available.
The PTA Executive Board still needs a Parlimentarian.  The Parlimentarian attends monthly board meetings and gives advice on parliamentary procedure and association by-laws.  Review and update PTA by-laws and standing rules.  Recruit and chair nominating committee in the early spring.  If you are detail-oriented and would like to better understand the workings of the PTA from the school level on up, we need you.  Support and training is available.
International Fair Co-chairs
Our major spring social event still needs co-chairs to organize this celebration of our community’s diversity.  This fun weekend event is a community favorite, but without leadership we may not be able to hold the International Fair this year.  Past chairs are available for support and consultation.

PTA Council Representative

This is a great opportunity to learn about what is going in the larger school district.  The PTAC Representative attends six PTA Council meetings during the year (alternating between Wednesday mornings and evenings) and reports back to the Palo Verde Executive Board and general membership as needed.  This position can give you insight on the entire district and certain education issues at the state level.

Coffee Socials Chair
This one is fun and easy!  Set-up our once per month morning coffee chats.  If you talk your best friend into co-chairing with you then you’re guaranteed to chat with each other at least once a month, plus meet other parents and talk with Principal Brown regularly.

To learn more about one of these positions, contact Heather Schultz, PTA President, 424-8380,
