New Schedule For 2012-13 School Year: More Instructional Time for Reading

We are excited to announce a new schedule that will be in place at Palo Verde beginning next year.  As a staff we have decided to end our Early/Late Reading sessions.

With the district-wide implementation of Reader’s Workshop and Guided Reading we are finding that dividing our students into two groups for reading limits the amount of time and activities that we are able to spend on reading instruction. Reader’s Workshop requires significantly more time than the 50 minutes of time allotted for reading instruction currently.

Every first through third grade student will now receive an additional fifteen minutes of instruction Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.   We will have one start time for all students, 8:15 am.  Kindergarten schedule will remain the same for next year.  1st – 3rd grade students will be released as an entire group at 2:15 Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Friday.  4th and 5th grade students will be released at 2:50.

In the past Palo Verde had a longer Wednesday schedule than all other schools in the district to make up some of the time lost for the fewer minutes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  With our increase in minutes for next year we will reduce Wednesday’s schedule to match the rest of the schools in PAUSD.  Wednesday’s all students, K – 5, will attend school from 8:15 to 1:15.

The new Schedule is as follows

K – 5 School Starts at 8:15 am for all students every day, M – F

1-3   School ends at 2:15 pm – M, Tu, Th and Fri

4-5   School Ends at 2:50 pm- M, Tu, Th and Fri

May Fete Parade: Staging and Meeting Information

We are all set to parade the wonderful “Palo Verde Express” at the May Fete parade on Saturday, May 5, on University Avenue. Please check your child’s Friday folders today for a detailed map of where Palo Verde is on the parade line up, parking and restroom locations. We are number 14 in the line up. The parade starts exactly at 10 am please arrive at 9:30 am to our staging area. Look for the Palo Verde Express (a blue/red  train float with a monopoly man engine face in silver) for a quick guidance to where we are located.

Children and adults are encouraged to dress up in school spirit gear and children are encouraged to wear train engineer hats. On a first come first serve basis we have a limited number of wooden train whistles and scarves for Palo Verde children who come for the parade. Please arrive at 9:30 am.

Open Seats on School Site Council

 School Site Councils were set up as a result of a statewide program begun in 1990 called School-Based Program Coordination (SBPC). The goal was to enable those individuals closest to the students to be involved in making significant decisions affecting the school’s instructional programs, curriculum, and budget. It was a way for those in the school community to work together toward the common goal of improving the school for all students by coordinating and directing the use of supplemental funds.

The School Site Council (SSC) is composed of representatives from all segments of our school community: the principal, 4 staff members, and 4 parents. The SSC comes together to develop a comprehensive school plan to ensure that students of all ranges of ability are best served.

At Palo Verde, the SSC meets generally at 3:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month in the Staff Lounge. Meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend. Members serve for two years, with terms staggered so that about half of the council is re-elected each year to insure continuity. The Site Council is an important communications link between parents and teachers to ensure that we all work together to meet the needs of all students in the school. The Site Council also works closely with the PTA to set priorities and coordinate our expenditures to benefit the maximum number of students.

If you are interested in running for a seat on the council, please submit a letter of interest to Principal Brown with the following information:  name, grade levels for your children, a brief statement for the reason you want to be a member of the School Site Council by Friday, May 11.  The election of new parent representatives to the SSC will be held at Open House on May 22, 2012.

Staff Appreciation Week: May 7-11

Staff Appreciation week is quickly approaching — May 7 – 11! During this week the staff will enjoy a wonderful luncheon hosted by the Kinder rooms to a handful of events hosted by the PTA.

One way your child can contribute during Staff Appreciation Week is to support our theme – “Banner of Thanks”! A statement of what your child enjoys or has learned from a staff member often brings smiles and true recognition.

*This year please talk with your child and encourage him/her to write several notes, create a drawing with a statement or find ways to verbally let a teacher (current or past), classroom aide and extended staff members know how important they are during Appreciation week.

Extended Staff: Main office, Custodians, Librarian, Music teacher, Spectra Art, PE and Resource Team.

We THANK YOU in advance for taking time to think of our Extended Staff who also support our children throughout the year. You might ask your child who they would like to thank!

Children are welcome to do this ANY DAY during Appreciation week!

For those who would like to purchase something for a staff member we highly recommend the “Staff Favorites Binder” located in the Main Office. This is a very useful resource. Again, you are welcome to do this any day that week.

Importantly, you are not obligated to do a thing.

Open House May 22 6:00pm – 6:30pm BYOF Dinner and Project Resilience Meeting

6:30 pm – 8:00 pm Classrooms Are Open

Please plan on attending our 2011/12 Open House, Tuesday, May 22. This is an event for the entire family.   The evening begins with families gathering for a “BYO Food” picnic at 6:00 PM.

For parents of our 4th and 5th graders, there will be an informational meeting about Project Resilience in the multi-purpose room from 6 to 6:30.  Come hear about what your child has been doing this spring in Project Resilience and get some wonderful insight on preparing you child and yourself for middle school.

Classroom doors will open at 6:30 PM.  A reminder to all, that Open House is not a night to conference with your child’s teacher about the academic progress he/she is making, nor is it a time to interview potential teachers for next year.  We encourage you to visit all the classrooms in the school and let your child (ren) show off the school to you.

Annual Talent Show

Palo Verde’s sixth annual Talent Show will be on Wednesday, May 30!  We have more acts than ever before, including musical instruments, great dancing and beautiful singing.  In order to accommodate everyone, we have scheduled three daytime performances in the MP Room.  Grades 4 and 5 will be at 9am.  Kindergarten and 1st grade is scheduled for 10:30am.  Grades 2 and 3 will be at 12:15pm.  Parents are invited to attend the assemblies during the day.  We will not be having an evening event this year.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Restaurant Night

Give yourself a night off from the kitchen and join other Palo Verde families for lunch or dinner at Fresh Choice, a self-service salad, soup and pasta restaurant. Fresh Choice will donate 15% of lunch and dinner sales to our school from patrons bringing in the Palo Verde flyer on Thursday May 31.  Join us at Fresh Choice, Mountain View at 2540 W. El Camino Real, across from Whole Foods.

Technology & PE Summer Class @ Palo Verde! 

A Mixture of Technology, P.E., & Fun

4 Weeks / 16 students / Current Grades 3rd, 4th, & 5th

The goal for this summer school class is to provide a fun, interactive learning experience that offers a small number of students the opportunity to increase, explore, and expand their technology skills while making time to exercise and have fun outside.  The class will be limited to 16 students and will be held during the dates of traditional summer school: June 18 through July 13, with no class on July 4th.  Each day this 3-hour class will include a blend of morning warmup activities, a technology session, a time for organized PE activities & games, then another technology session.  There will not be a separate recess or snack time as the class is three hours.  Snacks and drinks can be brought to class and consumed when needed.

In Palo Alto, families have numerous summer opportunities for kids, however this class is offered as a unique opportunity focusing on fun, technology, and exercise.   Due to the limited number of students in this program, the class will be filled according to a first come, first serve basis.  Thank you for considering this summer class for your child.

Math Camp Open House

We would like to invite parents and students to our Open House which will be held on May 8, Tuesday, at 7:00 pm in Jordan Middle School (750 North California Ave, Palo Alto)  Room P1
This is a great opportunity to meet with our teachers, learn more about Classic Math School overall teaching principles and ideas as well as School-Year-Round programs.
Your questions will be answered, your students will be offered a free Placement Test, mandatory for students in grades 4 and above, but recommended for all students. Light refreshment will be served.

The Open House Night is also the time, when we expect you to complete your enrollment process to secure your child’s space in the Summer Math Camp. Please be advised that we do not accept credit cards, only checks or cash.

Our Children Our Future Education Initiative on November Ballot

The California State PTA supports the Our Children Our Future education initiative for the November ballot.  If passed this measure will raise between $10-11 billion each year for 12 years to restore education programs and services our children need now.  It devotes funds to state debt reduction.
