May Fete Parade: Theme “We Know How to Play”

Seeking a Fearless Parent Float Leader

This year’s May Fete parade in downtown Palo Alto is on Saturday May 5.

Last year thanks to some amazing ideas from PV students and dedicated and creative parent volunteers, we won the mayor’s award for the best float in the parade and were able to create a lovely banner .

Palo Verde will be participating this year, but we will not have a float unless someone steps up to lead the float construction. If you are handy and/or creative and would like to step up to be our fearless float leader, please contact Anjani Sarma by Friday, March 30.

As the float leader, you will have a pre-built base with wheels to work with, a group to support you, a budget for materials and an idea to work with (see Banner Contest below). We have until May 4 to finish our float.

Banner and Float Idea Contest

Calling all artists! Calling all artists! We’re inviting all Palo Verde kids to help design the banner/ float. Flyer and form will be going in your child’s Friday folders next week. If you are going away for spring break and would like the form/flyer sooner, forms will be available in the office from noon today. The name of the child whose idea is used for the school float, will be announced at the parade on May 5.

Designs should be related to the parade theme: “We Know How to Play and Have Fun”. Please submit entries at the office by Tuesday April 10. Entries should be on the 8 ½” by

11″ paper attached, and include your child’s name and room number. (note: only 1 entry per student & 1 student per entry).

Winner will be selected shortly after spring break and will receive a special Palo Verde gift.

Call for PTA representatives to serve on the Cubberley Community Advisory Committee

A proposed timeline and process for the City of Palo Alto and PAUSD to collaborate on the possible uses for the Cubberley site have been proposed to the City Council.  Part of that proposal includes the formation of a Community Advisory Committee (CAC).  The CAC will be a cross section group of community stakeholders (15 to 20 members).

The CAC’s principle function will be to provide feedback to staff and the Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) on use/re-use scenarios. Initial ideas will be drafted and tested with community members to help refine concepts to a point where a consensus Scenarios Master Plan is developed and can be considered by the School Board and Council. The CAC is expected to work concurrently with the PAC schedule.

Estimated Timeline: April 2012 to January 2013

If you are interested in serving on the Cubberley Community Advisory Committee (CAC), please submit a brief paragraph detailing your background and school affiliation to Kim Amsbaugh, Palo Verde PTA president ( by March 26. Each PTA will submit one person for consideration to serve on the committee.  There are only 3 slots: one slot each from the elementary, middle and high schools. The Palo Alto District PTA will review the school PTA candidates and narrow it down to 3 to serve on the CAC representing PTA from April 2012 to January 2013.

Message from Barb Mitchell PAUSD Liaison

Palo Alto Rail Corridor Study Task Force

The City of Palo Alto is inviting resident input on a new plan for the “Rail Corridor” zone – the entire five-mile belt of Palo Alto between El Camino Real and Alma. The latest draft articulates improved circulation and revitalized neighborhood centers.

Please contribute your perspective at the City’s second Rail Corridor Study Community Workshop on Thursday, March 29 from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Lucie
Stern Community Center (1305 Middlefield Road).

Specifically, does the vision address the important safety and connectivity issues for PAUSD students and parents? Does it meet the needs of train, auto, bicycle and pedestrian commuters in each area? Does it reflect the
kind of development residents want?

Your “parent” voice is indeed welcome and important.
