Bringing Up Bicyclists: Free Class for Parents.Learn How to Help Your Child Make Safer Bicycling Choices

On Tuesday, March 20, 7- 8:30pm, please join us in Palo Verde library for this FREE class in a cozy library setting. Refreshments included. This event will also take place at the following locations

Tuesday, March 27, 7:00-8:30pm, Barron Park Elementary Library*

Monday, April 16, 7:00-8:30pm, Ohlone Elementary Library

Bicycling is a basic childhood skill that teaches self-reliance. To make sure children are safe and independent cyclists by age 10, parents must start building (and regularly practicing) safety skills with children in the early elementary school years. Even parents who have excellent bike skills themselves may not understand the developmental limitations that prevent their children from experiencing the road as their parents do.

“Bringing Up Bicyclists” is taught by League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor, Suzanne Ambiel, who uses demonstration, lecture with Powerpoint, video, and Q&A.  Parents come away understanding the basics, including: helmet fitting, bike safety checks, etc. They also learn about developmental limitations that affect how children up to age nine see and experience the road. The instructor teaches techniques and fun bike drills and games that parents can use to help children learn more challenging and important safety skills like over-the-shoulder checks.  She teaches specific techniques for safely approaching various kinds of intersections on a bike. She also suggests alternative strategies for cyclists of different skill levels.
