Back to School Potluck:

Please join us at our Annual Palo Verde International Potluck and Back to School Social on Friday, September 11, from 6-8 pm on the Palo Verde field. It’s a great way to catch up with friends, meet new families and enjoy wonderful food from all regions of the world.

Last Names A-L please bring an Appetizer. Last Names M-Z please bring a Main Dish

The Palo Verde PTA will provide dessert and drinks!

Chevy’s Restaurant Night:

Don’t miss this year’s first Restaurant Night  On September 15, eat at Chevy’s in Mountain View for lunch or dinner and present the Palo Verde flier you received in your Friday folder. The PTA will receive a donation of 25% of you total bill.  It’s a fun delicious way to see other Palo Verde families and an easy way to support our school!

5th Annual Palo Verde Walk-a-Thon:

Palo Verde’s 5th Annual Walk-a-thon is Friday, September 18.  Look for a flyer and donation form in your child’s Friday folder.  Money raised from the Walk-a-thon will be used to help fund students’ lunch time activities including Noon Art, Noon Games, YMCA activities and Walking Club, as well as purchase additional playground games, balls and equipment.  Palo Verde’s Walk-a-thon asks for donations based on participation. There are no per-lap contributions. Please have students ask only people they know for donations. All donations should be turned in with the student’s donation form by Friday, September 18.  All donations are tax deductible. Checks are payable to the Palo Verde PTA. If you can help punch lap cards or pass out water, or have any questions, please email Lauren Aspegren at msboot (at) yahoo dot com.

Update on Food Allergies in Children

Tuesday, September. 8, 7- 8:30 PM, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, 795 El Camino Real

Join Kristina Philpott, M.D. PAMF Allergy and Immunology to learn about the diagnosis and management of food allergies in children. Dr. Philpott will review the ongoing research on the safety and effectiveness of potential future treatments.  Hearst Center for Health Education, Level 3, Education office: 853-2960.

Note: Please do not bring children, as they cannot be accommodated at this event.


Suicide Prevention Fundraiser:

Thursday,  September 10, 11 AM – 10 PM, Chevy’s

September 6-12 is National Suicide Prevention Week.  Dine at Chevy’s restaurants on World Suicide Prevention Day and support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  Bring a flyer and take it to Chevy’s, where you can have dinner and Chevy’s will donate 25% of their proceeds to AFSP.  Click here to download a printable flyer to take with you to Chevy’s.

Palo Alto Airport Day:

Saturday,  September 12, 10 AM – 4PM, 1901 Embarcadero Road (at the airport), Palo Alto

Organized by the Palo Alto Airport Association,, Airport Day includes a free open house, free airplane rides (8-17 yrs), displays and activities for kids of all ages.  Admission and parking are free.  There will be planes and helicopters on static display, and fly-overs of interesting aircraft.  Airplane rides will be provided by volunteer pilots through the EAA Young Eagles program, a program which has given over 1.3 million children rides over the past dozen years.  There will be many educational booths and displays on aviation topics, as well as other community interests like the Baylands, live birds of prey exhibits, food vendors, and lots to see and do.

Midtown Residents Association Ice Cream Social:

Sunday, September 13, 1 – 4 PM, Hoover Park

The Midtown Residents Association will be hosting an Ice Cream & Issues Social at Hoover Park.  You can meet the City Council candidates, and get information on local issues and enjoy snacks and ice cream! There will also be activities for kids.

Seminar “Homework and School Achievement”:

Thursday. September 17, 7 – 9 PM, Bethany Lutheran Church, 1095 Cloud Ave., Menlo Park

Bethany Lutheran Church is hosting a free seminar for parents and educators (elementary through high school). Speaker Susan Stone Belton, BSE, is a Parenting Coach and Motivational Speaker with Parents Place in Palo Alto.  Seminar Description:  As homework expectations have increased for all school-aged children, it has become an area of conflict and concern for many families.  This workshop will explore the parents’ role with homework, how and when to help, and what to do when problems arise.  Seating is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Reservations required.  To reserve your seat, e-mail lindab (at) bethany-mp dot org or call 854-5897, ext. 210.  Include your name, phone number, e-mail address, and number of people attending.

Bicycle Traffic Skills Classes:

Sunday,  September 20, Saturday, October 3, or Sunday,  October 17, 1 – 5:30 PM

For children age 10-14 and their parents, bicycle traffic skills classes are offered by City of Palo Alto Recreation Dept.  Classes will cover the basics of traffic law; basic bike and helmet fitting; common types of bike crashes and how to avoid them; how to position yourself properly on the road; how to let drivers know your intentions; and how to deal with left turns and 4-way stops.  One parent is required to register and attend from each family.
